We mourn the passing, b'sayva tova at the age of 102, of Rabbi Dr. Moshe Carmilly-Weinberger Z"L Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University. Dr. Carmilly was born in Budapest in 1908. He received his Doctorate in 1934 from the University of Budapest and he studied at the Breslov Institute where he received Smicha in 1935. In 1936 he became the Chief Rabbi of Kluge, the capital of Transylvania, a community of 18,000 Jews. During the Holocaust, Dr. Carmilly helped 1200 Jews get exit visas out of Transylvania. Dr. Carmilly finally came to Israel himself in 1944. From 1948-1950 Dr. Carmilly served in the Israeli consulate in Budapest. Dr. Carmilly returned to Israel and served as principal of an elementary school and a high school. In 1957, Dr. Carmilly was offered the position of Professor of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University where he taught from 1957-1975 when he retired as Profesor Emeritus.
Dr. Carmilly published 250 articles and 15 books. Both of my parents, Edythe and Jerry Margolin were studentsof Dr. Carmilly at Yeshiva University. Dr. Carmilly's wife, Sarah passed away in 1972 and when I was born in 1973, my parents named me after Sarah (by adding in the vav and nun). My family has kept in touch with Dr. Carmilly over the years and I had the honor of seeing him right after he turned 100 at his apartment in Manhattan. He was still reading, writing and lecturing. Dr. Carmilly did not have any children and therefore there is no one who is physically sitting Shiva for him. However, he had many students over the years who are spiritually mourning for him. In Memory of Dr. Carmilly, we are establishing the Torat Moshe Library and Scholarship Funds to help grant scholarships to serious young women who may otherwise not be able to afford to study Torah in Israel for the year at Midreshet Devora.
